NPCs & Dialogue
Everything about the 96 NPCs of Aeternum — their roles, the Favor system, dialogue mechanics, and the ten most important characters in the game.

NPC System Overview
Aeternum is populated by 96 named NPCs spread across all 7 major regions and the hidden Blood Moon Sanctum. Every NPC has a defined role, a dialogue tree, and a Favor meter that tracks your relationship with them. NPCs are never hostile by default — only dungeon-type mobs and flagged PvP combatants can initiate attacks. Interacting with NPCs is free, requires no stamina, and can be performed from any authentication state (guest players may talk, but cannot accept quests or receive rewards).
The NPC roster includes region-exclusive characters (such as the Frost Seer of the Frozen Peaks, available only to players who have unlocked that zone), as well as universal NPCs like the Wandering Merchant who appears in all regions on a rotating 48-hour schedule. All NPC locations are shown on the World Map.
NPC Types
NPCs fall into eight functional categories, each with distinct interactions and icon colors on the minimap:

Favor System
Each NPC tracks your Favor score from 0 to 100 points. Your relationship tier unlocks progressively better rewards and dialogue options. Favor is per-character (not account-wide) and cannot be transferred between characters. Favor does not decay over time except for one specific NPC: the Shadow Broker, who loses 5 Favor per real-world week of inactivity.
Favor tiers are as follows:
- Stranger — 0–19 points. Basic dialogue only. No quest access.
- Acquaintance — 20–39 points. Side quests unlocked. 5% discount at shopkeeper NPCs.
- Friend — 40–59 points. Unique lore entries unlocked. NPC will hint at hidden locations.
- Ally — 60–79 points. Exclusive items available. Trainer NPCs reduce skill costs by 10%.
- Trusted — 80–100 points. Maximum benefits. Unique cosmetic dialogue, hidden quest chains, and rare gift items every 7 days.
Gaining Favor
The primary method of gaining Favor is completing NPC Missions — short tasks issued by each NPC that reset on a 1-hour cooldown per NPC. Each completed mission grants +10 Favor with that NPC. A single character can therefore reach maximum Favor with any NPC in a minimum of 9 completed missions (90 points) spread across 9 hours of active play.
Additional Favor sources include: gifting specific trade items (each NPC has 2–3 preferred items listed in their profile), completing their associated chain quest (grants +25 Favor on completion), and participating in region-wide events that feature that NPC as a storyline figure (+5 Favor during the event period).
Focus on Trainers first — reaching Ally tier with the Combat Trainer in Crimson Highlands cuts skill upgrade costs and lets you spend gold more efficiently during early levels.

Dialogue System
NPC dialogue is quest-aware: the options shown change based on your active quests, completed objectives, race, and Favor tier. When an NPC has a chain quest pending, a glowing exclamation icon appears above them on the world map. Clicking "Talk" opens the dialogue panel, which may include multiple branches.
Quest-linked dialogue uses the chain_quest_id redirect system: completing a step in a multi-part quest automatically updates the next NPC's dialogue to acknowledge your progress, creating a seamless narrative flow without needing to re-open your journal. Guest (unauthenticated) players see a simplified dialogue tree and cannot accept rewards, though lore-only conversations are fully available to encourage exploration before registration.
Mission Completion Rewards
Beyond Favor points, NPC missions grant tangible rewards. Standard mission reward pools include:
- Gold — Scales with your level and the NPC's region difficulty.
- XP — Approximately 1.5× the XP from defeating a region-appropriate monster.
- Materials — Region-specific crafting components (e.g., Nightshade from Shadowfen missions).
- Reputation tokens — Used at faction vendors for exclusive armor sets.
- Rare drops — Trusted-tier NPCs have a 5% chance to reward a rare item on each mission.
