World & Regions of Aeternum

From the drowned starter mires of Shadowfen to the ash-choked, boss-haunted Crimson Wastes, the world of Aeternum is a single continuous battlefield split between vampire and werewolf ambition. This atlas maps every major region — its level range, who controls it, and what it rewards the hunters bold enough to enter.

Aeternum was never meant to be shared. The old maps, drawn before the Sundering, show one kingdom under one crown; the maps players use today show a wound. Rivers that once irrigated farmland now run through Shadowfen's fever-swamps. The forges of Ironhollow, dug by dwarven miners long dead, burn again under werewolf packmasters. And where the capital once stood, the Crimson Wastes spread like dried blood across the land — beautiful, silent, and lethal.

"Three roads leave every safe hearth. One leads to the swamp, one to the mines, and one to the ash. Only fools take all three before their thirtieth kill." — Warden Halric, Shadowfen garrison

Understanding the regions is the single most important skill a new hunter can learn. Fixed-difficulty zones mean the world does not bend to your level — you must grow to meet it. Read the region pages below before you travel, and always know which Waystone you can flee to.

The Aeternum Atlas

Text map of Aeternum (west to east): The continent reads as a diagonal band from the humid lowlands in the southwest to the burning highlands in the northeast.

  • Southwest — Shadowfen (Lv 1–20): A basin of flooded mires and reed islands. Roads run along raised causeways; the central hub is Mirewatch garrison. Contested territory.
  • Central — Ironhollow (Lv 20–45): A mountain range riddled with old mine shafts and forge-halls. Werewolf-held on the surface, with a vampire enclave in the flooded Sunless Deep below. Reached by the East Causeway out of Shadowfen.
  • Northeast — The Crimson Wastes (Lv 45–60+): A scorched plateau of red salt flats, bone dunes and the ruined old capital. The endgame region. Reached through the Ashgate pass at the far end of Ironhollow.
Regions connect in a straight progression: Shadowfen → Ironhollow → Crimson Wastes. Explore the interactive World Map or browse every named point of interest in the Locations index.

Recommended Progression

Aeternum is designed to be run in order. Push Shadowfen to level 20 and secure your first mount at the Mirewatch stables. Cross the East Causeway into Ironhollow, clear the Deepvein and Forgefall dungeons for gear, and mine ingots to level your crafting. Once you are level 45 with a full set of Rare gear, travel through the Ashgate into the Crimson Wastes — but do not fight anything off the roads until you reach level 55 and have a group. For a zone-by-zone starter map, see the dedicated Shadowfen zone guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many regions are in Aeternum?
Three primary macro-regions are covered here — Shadowfen (1–20), Ironhollow (20–45) and the Crimson Wastes (45–60+). Each holds many sub-zones, farming pockets and instanced dungeons.
What is the best starter region?
Shadowfen. It is contested but low-lethality, making it the ideal place for both factions to reach level 20, learn combat, and earn a first mount before entering Ironhollow.
Which regions are faction-controlled?
Shadowfen is contested. Ironhollow is Werewolf-dominant with a Vampire foothold in the Sunless Deep. The Crimson Wastes are fully contested endgame territory whose world-boss control flips daily during the Eclipse War.
What level do I need for the Crimson Wastes?
The gate opens at level 45, but elite packs and world bosses are tuned for level 55–60 grouped play. Solo travel below 55 survives on roads but is lethal off them.
How do I travel between regions?
By road and by attuned Waystone shrines. Once attuned, you can fast-travel to a Waystone for a small blood or silver cost. The World Map shows every attuned Waystone and the roads between them.
Do regions have level scaling?
No. Aeternum uses fixed-difficulty zones. A region's stated level range is the real power of its mobs, so out-leveling a zone makes farming faster but far less XP-rewarding.
Where are the best gold-farming spots?
Early: Bogwitch camps in Shadowfen. Mid: Ore Wraiths in Ironhollow's Deepvein Cut. Endgame: Ashborne elites and world-boss chests in the Crimson Wastes.
Are regions PvP-enabled?
Shadowfen and Ironhollow are PvE with optional flagged PvP. The Crimson Wastes are open-world PvP during the Eclipse War window — bring a group and expect ambushes near boss spawns.
What is the difference between a region and a dungeon?
A region is a persistent open-world area shared by everyone on your shard. A dungeon is an instanced encounter inside a region — a private copy for your party with tuned bosses and guaranteed loot.
How often do world bosses respawn?
Shadowfen and Ironhollow world bosses respawn on a 45–90 minute timer. Crimson Wastes bosses run on a fixed daily reset and only spawn during the active Eclipse War phase.
