Shadowfen Contested · Lv 1–20

Every hunter's story begins here, ankle-deep in black water. Shadowfen is the drowned starter region of Aeternum — a basin of fever-mires, reed islands and half-sunk causeways where both Vampires and Werewolves draw their first blood.

Shadowfen was farmland once. The rivers that fed the old kingdom broke their banks during the Sundering and never returned to their courses, and so the lowlands drowned. What grows here now grows in rot: bloodreed along the causeways, pale fungus in the flooded crypts, and the bogwitches who tend neither. The garrison at Mirewatch keeps the roads open, but nobody pretends the swamp is safe — only that it is slow to kill, which for a first-week hunter is mercy enough.

"The fen doesn't hate you. It just doesn't notice you drowning." — Stablemaster Yorrin, Mirewatch

Geography

Text map of Shadowfen: A shallow basin, roughly circular, drained by raised stone causeways radiating from a central garrison.

  • Center — Mirewatch Garrison: The safe hub. Waystone, stables, quest-givers, and the only merchant row. All causeways begin here.
  • North — Drownmoor: The deepest, oldest water. Home to the will-o'-wisp swarms, the Drownmoor Sink dungeon entrance, and Grielda's altar (world boss).
  • East — Reedwych Islands: A chain of reed islets holding the Bogwitch camps (levels 12–16), the region's best farm.
  • West — Sunken Chapel: Ruined shrine with the region's early lore quests and low-level undead (levels 3–7).
  • East exit — The East Causeway: The road out to Ironhollow. Guarded by level 18 fen-lurkers.
Shadowfen is a single connected basin; you can walk from Mirewatch to any point of interest along a causeway without swimming. See it in context on the World Map or the full Shadowfen zone guide.

Quests

Shadowfen's main chain teaches every core system in order. Start with "First Blood" (combat basics) from Warden Halric, then "Causeway Wardens" (unlocks your first mount), the western "Whispers in the Chapel" lore arc, and finally "The Hag's Bargain", which culminates in the Grielda world-boss fight. Completing the chain to level 20 and clearing the Drownmoor Sink is the intended gear check before you leave for Ironhollow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level is Shadowfen?
It is the level 1–20 starter region. Causeway mobs are 1–8, the mires and Bogwitch camps run 10–18, and Grielda the world boss is tuned for a level 18–20 group.
Where do I start in Shadowfen?
Both factions begin at Mirewatch garrison. Talk to Warden Halric for the tutorial chain, then follow the causeway quests out toward the Reedwych islands.
What is the best farming spot?
The Bogwitch camps on the Reedwych islands (Lv 12–16) — best combined XP and gold, plus Witch-Ash reagents. For pure XP, the Drownmoor will-o'-wisp swarms.
How do I beat Grielda the Swamp-Hag?
Bring 3–5 level 18+ players. Avoid her green poison pools, interrupt Curdle Blood, and kill adds fast. She drops the Hagbone Charm and a gold cache.
Is Shadowfen safe for new players?
Yes — it is contested but PvE by default with optional flagged PvP, and the mobs are low-lethality, making it the safest place to learn combat.
Where is my first mount?
Finish the 'Causeway Wardens' chain, then buy the Fenstrider marsh-horse from Stablemaster Yorrin for 500 silver. It ignores the swamp's movement slow.
What resources can I gather here?
Alchemy reagents: Witch-Ash from Bogwitches, Bloodreed on the causeways, and Fen Fungus in the Drownmoor caves.
How do I leave Shadowfen?
Take the East Causeway from Mirewatch straight into Ironhollow (Lv 20–45). Be level 18–20 with full Uncommon gear first.
Are there dungeons in Shadowfen?
One — the Drownmoor Sink, a level 15–18 three-boss crypt. It is the recommended gear check before Ironhollow.
What faction controls Shadowfen?
Neither. It is contested territory shared by both factions, with only minor race-flavored dialogue differences.
