Rune System Recap
Before diving into advanced combinations, here is a quick recap of how the rune system works. VvW features 30 base runes divided into 6 types: Strength, Defense, Speed, Magic, Luck, and Life. Each type has 5 tiers, with higher tiers requiring higher character levels and rarer crafting materials.
| RUNE TYPE | TIER 1 (Lv. 1) | TIER 3 (Lv. 30) | TIER 5 (Lv. 70) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | Minor Shard: +3 STR | Steel Shard: +10 STR, +5% ATK | Void Shard: +25 STR, +15% ATK, +5% crit |
| Defense | Stone Rune: +3 DEF | Shadow Guard: +12 DEF, +10% HP | Titan Guard: +30 DEF, +25% HP, +20% regen |
| Speed | Wind Rune: +3 SPD, +2% dodge | Shadow Wind: +10 SPD, +8% dodge, +5% crit | Void Wind: +25 SPD, +20% dodge, +12% crit |
| Magic | Arcane Rune: +3 INT, +5% skill dmg | Moon Arcane: +10 INT, +12% skill dmg, -5% CD | Ancient Arcane: +25 INT, +25% skill dmg, -15% CD |
| Luck | Fortune Rune: +3 LCK, +5% gold drop | Moon Fortune: +10 LCK, +15% gold, +10% item chance | Void Fortune: +25 LCK, +30% gold, +20% legendary |
| Life | Vitality Rune: +50 HP, +1% regen | Moon Vitality: +250 HP, +5% regen, +3 END | Eternal Life: +1000 HP, +12% regen, +10 END |
Runes are socketed into equipment with available socket slots. The number of sockets depends on the item's rarity and slot type. Legendary weapons can have up to 3 sockets, while legendary armor can have up to 2. Boots, rings, and amulets gain sockets only at epic or legendary rarity.
Rune Word Scrolls: How to Use
Rune Words are not automatically activated when you socket the right combination of runes. You need a Rune Word Scroll to bind the combination and activate its bonus effect. Here is how the system works:
- Obtain a Rune Word Scroll: Scrolls drop from dungeon bosses (D6+), are sold by faction reputation vendors, or can be crafted at the Enchanting Table with rare materials. Each scroll is tied to a specific Rune Word recipe.
- Socket the required runes: Insert the exact runes specified by the Rune Word into sockets on your equipped gear. The runes can be spread across different equipment pieces; they do not need to be on the same item.
- Activate the scroll: Open the Rune Word panel in your character menu, select the scroll, and activate it. The system verifies that all required runes are socketed and then permanently binds the Rune Word bonus.
- Enjoy the bonus: The Rune Word bonus effect appears as a separate buff in your character sheet. It remains active as long as all the component runes remain socketed.
If you unsocket any rune that is part of an active Rune Word, the bonus deactivates. You do not lose the scroll; simply re-socket the rune to reactivate it. However, removing a rune from a socket requires a Rune Extraction Tool (available from crafting vendors) to avoid destroying the rune.
Always use a Rune Extraction Tool when removing runes. Without it, the rune is destroyed and you lose both the rune and the Rune Word bonus. Extraction Tools cost 500 gold each, which is a small price compared to re-crafting a Tier 5 rune.

Best Rune Builds by Playstyle
PvE Tank Build
Goal: maximum survivability for endgame dungeon tanking. You want to absorb hits and self-heal.
- Primary Rune Word: Titan's Will (Blood Guard + Moon Vitality + Iron Guard) — Auto-heal 5% HP per turn. This is the cornerstone of any tank build. With 3 runes across your weapon and armor sockets, you gain constant HP regeneration.
- Secondary Rune Word: Eternal Guard (Titan Vitality + Blood Guard) — 3% chance to nullify any attack. Combined with high DEF, this makes you incredibly durable against boss spike damage.
- Remaining sockets: Fill with Titan Guard (+30 DEF, +25% HP, +20% regen) for maximum defensive stats.
- Total sockets needed: 7 minimum (3 for Titan's Will, 2 for Eternal Guard, 2 for Titan Guard). Achievable with legendary weapon (3) + legendary armor (2) + legendary helmet (2).
PvE DPS Build
Goal: maximum damage output for fast dungeon clears and boss kills.
- Primary Rune Word: Ancient Power (Ancient Arcane + Titan Guard) — +50% skill damage + 20% physical damage. The single highest damage bonus from any Rune Word.
- Secondary Rune Word: Berserker's Path (Steel Shard + Moon Fortune) — HP<30%: +40% ATK, +20% crit. Powerful execute-phase damage boost for finishing off bosses.
- Remaining sockets: Void Shard (+25 STR, +15% ATK, +5% crit) for raw damage stacking.
- Total sockets needed: 5 minimum. Works with epic+ gear across weapon and armor.
PvP Burst Build
Goal: kill your opponent in the fewest turns possible.
- Primary Rune Word: Night Predator (Shadow Shard + Shadow Wind) — Night time: +60% ATK, +30% dodge. Devastating during night hours. Schedule your ranked matches accordingly.
- Secondary Rune Word: Shadow Strike (Minor Shard + Wind Rune) — 10% chance to teleport + attack on crit. Additional burst potential on critical hits.
- Remaining sockets: Void Shard and Void Wind for maximum offensive stats.
- Note: This build is weaker during daytime. For consistent PvP performance, consider the Sustain build below.
PvP Sustain Build
Goal: outlast your opponent through healing, dodge, and attrition.
- Primary Rune Word: Shadow Lord (Ghost Step + Void Arcane) — +25% dodge + counter 100% ATK. Every dodge becomes a free attack. This single Rune Word defines PvP sustain.
- Secondary Rune Word: Blood Frenzy (Minor Shard + Vitality Rune) — +20% life steal. Sustain through damage dealt. Pairs perfectly with the counter-attacks from Shadow Lord.
- For Vampires: Replace Blood Frenzy with Blood Dominion (Void Arcane + Blood Fortune) for +30% life steal and +15% skill damage. This is the strongest PvP sustain setup in the game for Vampires.
- For Werewolves: Replace Blood Frenzy with Wolf's Blessing (Void Wind + Blood Vitality) for +50% Pack skill power. Pack skills provide both damage and utility, making this the optimal Werewolf PvP configuration.
If you can only afford one Rune Word setup, choose based on your primary activity. PvE players should prioritize Titan's Will or Ancient Power. PvP players should prioritize Shadow Lord. These single Rune Words provide the largest power spikes and are worth investing in before diversifying.
Socket Strategy
Socket availability is the primary bottleneck for Rune Word builds. Understanding which gear pieces have sockets and how to maximize them is critical:
| SLOT | COMMON | UNCOMMON | RARE | EPIC | LEGENDARY |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Armor (Chest) | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| Helmet | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| Boots | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Ring | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Amulet | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
A player with full legendary gear has a maximum of 10 sockets (3 weapon + 2 chest + 2 helmet + 1 boots + 1 ring + 1 amulet). This is enough for two three-rune Rune Words and two two-rune Rune Words, or a variety of other combinations. Plan your Rune Word build around your available sockets and prioritize upgrading gear pieces that unlock additional sockets.
Socket Optimization Tips
- Weapons first: Legendary weapons provide 3 sockets, the most of any single piece. Prioritize obtaining a legendary weapon before other slots.
- Do not waste sockets on low-tier runes: A Tier 1 rune in a legendary socket is a waste. Wait until you can craft or acquire Tier 3+ runes before filling your sockets.
- Plan your Rune Words before socketing: Once a rune is socketed, removing it requires an Extraction Tool. Plan your complete build on paper first, then socket everything at once.
- Ring and amulet sockets are precious: With only 1 socket each and only on legendary items, these slots should always hold runes that complete Rune Word combinations, not standalone stat runes.
Rune Farming
Crafting high-tier runes requires specific materials that come from different sources:
- Iron Ore, Wolf Pelts, Bat Wings: Common materials from open-world farming. Dark Forest and Graveyard Lands are the best sources for Tier 1-2 rune materials.
- Shadow Crystals: Drop from D4-D6 dungeon bosses and Shadow Mountains monsters. Required for most Tier 3 runes.
- Moon Crystals: Farm in the Moonlit Cavern or purchase from faction vendors. Key ingredient for Tier 3-4 magic and luck runes.
- Blood Stones, Dark Essence: Drop from endgame content (D7+ dungeons, PvP reward chests). Required for Tier 4 runes.
- Void Essence, Void Shards, Soul Crystals: The rarest materials, dropping only from D10+ bosses and the Blood Moon Realm. Required for Tier 5 runes.
- Frost Crystals: Available during the Winter Frost seasonal event. Used to craft the Titan Guard (T5 Defense) rune.
Focus on crafting Tier 3 runes first. They offer 60-70% of the power of Tier 5 runes at a fraction of the material cost. A full set of Tier 3 runes with active Rune Words is stronger than scattered Tier 5 runes without Rune Words.
Advanced Tips
- Rune Word stacking: Multiple Rune Words can be active simultaneously as long as you have enough sockets for all component runes. There is no limit to the number of active Rune Words.
- Conditional Rune Words are powerful when conditions are met: Night Predator (+60% ATK at night), Berserker's Path (+40% ATK below 30% HP), and Moon Ascendant (+80% magic on moon nights) are situationally the strongest effects in the game. Build around these conditions for maximum impact.
- Void Master is the endgame Rune Word: Requiring Ancient Arcane + Void Wind + Void Fortune (three Tier 5 runes), Void Master multiplies ALL bonuses by 1.5x in the Blood Moon Realm. This single Rune Word transforms Blood Moon Realm from challenging to trivial for well-geared players.
- Rune Word Scrolls are tradeable: If you find a scroll for a Rune Word you do not need, sell it on the Auction House. High-demand scrolls like Shadow Lord and Ancient Power fetch 10,000-20,000 gold.
- Fortune Hunter for farming: The Fortune Hunter Rune Word (Fortune Rune + Silver Fortune + Moon Fortune) provides +50% item drop and +25% gold drop. Dedicate a secondary gear set to this Rune Word for farming sessions, then swap to your combat set for dungeons and PvP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have two of the same rune socketed?
Yes. You can socket multiple copies of the same rune for stacking stat bonuses. However, a Rune Word only needs each component rune once. Duplicates do not activate the Rune Word twice.
What happens if I replace a rune that is part of a Rune Word?
The Rune Word deactivates immediately. You keep the scroll. Re-socket the correct rune to reactivate it. Always use an Extraction Tool (500g) to safely remove runes.
Can Rune Words from different gear pieces work together?
Yes. Rune Word components can be spread across any combination of equipped gear. A Rune Word requiring two runes can have one in your weapon and one in your helmet. The system checks all equipped sockets holistically.
What is the best Rune Word for new endgame players?
Blood Frenzy (Minor Shard + Vitality Rune). It requires only two Tier 1 runes, which are extremely cheap to craft, and provides +20% life steal. This is an enormous survivability boost for players just entering endgame content.
How many Rune Words can be active at once?
There is no limit. You can have as many active Rune Words as your sockets allow. A player with 10 legendary sockets could theoretically run 3-5 Rune Words simultaneously, though material costs make this a long-term goal.
Are Tier 5 runes worth the cost?
For your primary build, absolutely. A single Void Shard (+25 STR, +15% ATK, +5% crit) provides more damage than three Tier 3 runes combined. The material cost is steep, but Tier 5 runes are the single largest power upgrade available through the rune system. Prioritize crafting Tier 5 runes for slots that complete your most important Rune Words.
