Rune System Overview

VvW uses a socket-based rune system built around ten core rune words — RW01 through RW10 — each providing a distinct type of stat bonus when socketed into compatible gear slots. Runes are crafted from Rune Scrolls and inserted into gear that has available socket slots. Most gear drops with 0-2 natural socket slots; additional sockets can be added using the Extra Socket upgrade item (obtainable from the Mythic+ Vault and special event vendors).

Each rune can only be inserted once per character's equipped loadout — you cannot socket the same rune word into two different pieces simultaneously. Runes can be removed from sockets using a Socket Release item, which preserves the rune but destroys the socket (the gear slot returns to 0 natural sockets). This makes socket release an expensive decision — plan your socketing carefully before committing.

KEY MECHANIC

Extra Socket upgrades stack with natural sockets. A weapon with 2 natural sockets plus 2 Extra Socket upgrades supports 4 runes simultaneously — this is the maximum any single piece of gear can hold.

Farming Sources

Runes and Rune Scrolls drop from four primary sources. Each has a different efficiency profile depending on your character level and available content:

Dungeon Chests (D6+)

Dungeon chests from Dungeon 6 and above are the most consistent source of Rune Scrolls for mid-game players. Each chest has a guaranteed Rune Scroll chance at D6, improving through D10. You receive one chest per dungeon clear on normal difficulty; Heroic and Mythic difficulties offer additional chest rolls. Running D8+ on Heroic is the gold standard for consistent Rune Scroll acquisition before Mythic+ content is accessible.

Mythic+ Vault

The weekly Mythic+ Vault is the single best source of high-tier runes for endgame players. Each week, completing a Mythic+ dungeon at Key Level 5 or above rewards a Vault Cache containing 2-4 Rune Scrolls with a bias toward higher-tier scrolls (RW07-RW10). The Vault resets weekly — it should be considered non-negotiable content for any serious rune-farming player.

Infinity Tower (Floor 50+)

The Infinity Tower's milestone reward system drops Rune Scrolls at floors 50, 65, 80, and 100. Floor 100 has a guaranteed RW09 or RW10 scroll — the only reliable source of these two top-tier runes outside the Mythic+ Vault. Tower rewards are one-time per season, making each floor a permanent progression milestone rather than a repeatable farm.

Auction House

Rune Scrolls and crafted runes are both traded on the AH. Buying directly is expensive but immediate — useful when you need a specific rune to complete a build and cannot wait for RNG drops. Monitor AH prices at the start and end of weekly reset periods, when Vault clears flood the market and prices temporarily dip.

Socket Priority by Gear Slot

Not all gear slots provide equal value from rune socketing. The priority order is based on how frequently the slot's stats are applied in combat calculations:

  1. Weapon (highest priority) — weapon sockets amplify your primary damage output. Your highest-tier rune should go here first.
  2. Chest armor — the largest defensive slot. DEF and HP runes here provide the broadest survivability coverage.
  3. Helm — secondary offensive or defensive rune depending on build.
  4. Legs — tertiary slot, good for utility runes (dodge, resistance).
  5. Accessories (lowest priority) — smallest stat contribution per socket. Invest here last, after weapon and armor sockets are fully optimized.
SOCKETING STRATEGY

Do not socket runes into gear you expect to replace within the next 5 character levels. Rune removal destroys the socket — wait until you are in stable endgame gear before committing high-tier runes.

Rune Scroll Item Mapping (681–690)

In the game's item database, Rune Scrolls are stored as items 681-690, mapping directly to RW01-RW10:

Selling vs. Socketing

Not every rune you farm should be socketed into your own gear. The sell-vs-socket decision depends on three factors:

  • Is this rune BiS for your build? If yes, socket it. If not, evaluate AH value first.
  • What is the current AH price? RW09 and RW10 frequently list above 8,000-12,000 gold. If your build does not require them urgently, selling may provide more value than marginal stat gains.
  • Do you have a stable gear base? Socketing expensive runes into gear you will replace in two weeks is the most common waste in the game. Wait for gear you plan to hold for a full season.

Common Mistake: Socketing the Wrong Rune Type

The single most costly rune mistake is socketing a rune that does not align with your build's primary scaling stat. A Pack Shaman socketing RW08 (Havoc — flat ATK) gains almost nothing because Shaman skills scale from WIS and spell power, not ATK. RW08 is extremely valuable — but only on ATK-scaling subclasses like Blood Knight and Iron Howler.

Always cross-reference the rune's bonus type with your subclass's primary scaling stat before socketing. Check the Build Planner's rune preview tool, which shows the effective power gain from each rune relative to your current stat distribution. If the displayed gain is less than 5% effective power increase, the rune is likely mismatched for your build.
