Short answer: Vampire
If "Mage" means a dedicated burst-damage spellcaster, the answer is Vampire, no contest. Vampire is the only race with access to the Blood Mage subclass β the game's sole burst-magic tree, unlocked at level 20 alongside Shadow Assassin and Dark Knight. Werewolf's three subclasses (Moon Warrior, Pack Shaman, Berserker) are built around bleed/DoT, support totems, and HP-scaled melee β none of them play like a traditional glass-cannon caster. If your goal is to nuke enemies with magic damage, Vampire is not just the better choice, it is the only choice.
Why race locks your subclass options
Subclasses unlock at level 20, and each race only gets to pick from its own three. Vampire chooses between Blood Mage, Shadow Assassin, or Dark Knight; Werewolf chooses between Moon Warrior, Pack Shaman, or Berserker. There is no cross-race subclass access and, per the official class guide, subclass swaps cost either a 30-day cooldown or a premium Subclass Reset Token β so this is a decision worth getting right at character creation, not something to casually respec around.
Vampire's racial passives feed a caster directly
Beyond subclass access, Vampire's baseline racial kit is tuned toward a magic-focused playstyle. The race passive is life steal at a base 5% of damage dealt converted to healing β which scales with magic damage output just as well as physical, giving a Blood Mage sustain without spending a turn on a heal. Vampires also get a flat +20% STR bonus during Night Hours (22:00β02:00 UTC), and while that specific bonus is a strength buff rather than magic, it stacks with the race's naturally higher DEX (8) and LCK (6) versus Werewolf's DEX 5 / LCK 4 β meaning Vampires land more crits and dodge more incoming hits while their Blood Mage burns enemies down. Werewolf trades all of this for +8 base DEF, +14 STR, and a flat HP regen passive (2 HP/turn), which is excellent for a tanky melee build but does nothing for a caster's damage ceiling.
Blood Mage: the kit that makes the case
Blood Mage's passive block is +25% INT and +20% skill damage, at the cost of -15% DEF and -10% STR β a full glass-cannon trade that only pays off with magic damage output, which is exactly what the subclass is built around. The rotation opens with Blood Nova (tier 1, level 30) for 160% ATK AoE plus 10% HP drain per target, followed by Crimson Bolt (tier 1, level 32), a 200% ATK single-target bolt that ignores all DEF entirely β devastating against heavily-armored Dark Knights and raid bosses alike. At tier 2, Sanguine Surge grants +50% INT for 4 turns plus 20% life steal, and tier 3's Blood Ritual sacrifices 15% of your own HP for a 250% ATK magic strike, which becomes safe to spam once Sanguine Surge or gear-based healing is backing you up. The capstone, Blood Apocalypse (tier 5, level 80), is an 800% magic AoE that drains 50% of every enemy's HP β after the Patch 1.5 rebalance (Blood Cascade base damage +8%, Hemorrhage stack cap reduced from 8 to 5), it remains the single strongest sustained-damage finisher of any subclass in the game.
What if you already picked Werewolf?
Werewolf doesn't get a burst mage, but it does get a magic-scaling support caster: Pack Shaman. Its passive gives +30% ally bonus, +25% debuff duration, and +20% personal INT, at the cost of -20% personal STR and -15% personal damage. Pack Shaman isn't trying to out-nuke a Blood Mage β its Totem of Strength (tier 2) buffs the whole party's STR by 25%, and its capstone Apocalyptic Howl cuts all enemy stats by 80% for 3 turns while dealing 400% AoE damage. Patch 1.5 buffed the subclass directly (Moonrage cooldown 45β35s, duration 8β10s, Lunar Howl aura +3%β+5%), so it's a genuinely strong pick for clan content β just not a Mage in the burst-DPS sense the search term usually means.
Verdict
For raw single-target and AoE magic burst, Vampire's Blood Mage is the correct β and only β answer to "best race for Mage." Pick Werewolf only if you specifically want a support-caster hybrid (Pack Shaman) rather than a pure spellslinger, and go in knowing you're trading burst damage for team utility.
