Shadow Assassin

VAMPIRE SUBCLASS BURST · STEALTH SKILLS V14–V40

A glass dagger that decides the fight before it starts. The Shadow Assassin slips out of Veil of Dusk, lands a guaranteed critical Ambush, and chains combo-point finishers to delete a target in one window — then vanishes to reset and do it again.

Overview & Fantasy

The Duskblades do not duel. They arrive between one heartbeat and the next, and by the time the shadow lets go of them, the contract is already fulfilled. To be seen by a Shadow Assassin is to have already lost; the killing was decided the moment you turned your back.

The Shadow Assassin is the game's premier burst duelist. Its entire kit answers one question: how much damage can leave the daggers before the target can react? It trades durability for the highest opening burst of any subclass, and rewards patience — you strike once, from stealth, at the perfect moment.

Stealth Mechanics

Veil of Dusk is the subclass's signature. Understanding its rules is the difference between a one-shot and a wasted cooldown:

  • Duration: 6s, or until you attack — whichever comes first.
  • Guaranteed crit: your first attack from stealth always critically strikes, ignoring crit chance.
  • Untargetable: most single-target abilities cannot lock onto a stealthed Assassin; you are still hit by area damage.
  • Move speed: +30% while stealthed, for repositioning behind the target.
  • Exposed debuff: your Ambush from stealth applies Exposed, increasing your damage to that target by 20% for 4s — this is your burst window.

POSITIONING

Always open from behind the target. Ambush deals +15% bonus damage from behind, and staying out of the front arc delays their reaction to your Exposed window.

Ability Cooldown Table

Cooldowns at max rank, before haste. The rotation lives and dies by tracking Veil of Dusk and Smoke Step — your two survival buttons. Plan point spends in the Skill Tree Planner.

TIP

Night's Verdict executes targets below 25% HP instantly when it lands a 5-point finisher — hold it for the kill secure, not the opener.

Burst Rotation

The Shadow Assassin does not "rotate" so much as it executes. The full combo happens inside the 4s Exposed window:

  1. Veil of Dusk — enter stealth, reposition behind the target.
  2. Ambush — guaranteed crit, applies Exposed (+20% damage taken), builds 2 combo points.
  3. Cheap Shot — 2s stun so the target cannot react or heal; +1 combo point.
  4. Shadow Flurry — fills to 5 combo points during the stun.
  5. Assassinate — dump 5 combo points inside Exposed for peak burst.
  6. Night's Verdict — if the target survives above ~25%, finish; below 25% it executes.
  7. Smoke Step — if the target lives, disengage and reset Veil of Dusk to try again.

WARNING

If you break stealth early (from area damage or a mis-timed key), abort the combo. A non-crit Ambush loses roughly 45% of your total burst — reposition and re-stealth rather than committing a weak opener.

Crit Itemization

Because Ambush and Assassinate crit for free from stealth, crit damage multiplies your opener more than crit chance past the soft cap. Itemize in two phases:

PRIORITY 1

DEX

Crit chance & attack power. Stack to ~55–60% crit, then stop.

PRIORITY 2

AGI

Crit-damage multiplier. Everything after the crit soft-cap goes here.

PRIORITY 3

VIT

A small buffer to survive being focused after your combo.

DUMP

STR / INT

No dagger scaling. Keep at base.

  • Weapon: twin Nightfang Daggers — highest raw attack power; +crit-damage affix preferred.
  • Set (BiS): Umbral Shroud (4-piece) — 2pc: +12% crit damage; 4pc: killing blow refreshes Veil of Dusk.
  • Enchants: crit chance until ~58%, then crit damage on every remaining slot.
  • Runes: Rune of the Verdict (execute threshold +5%) > Rune of Shadows (stealth duration) > Rune of Precision.

PvP vs PvE Builds

🗡 PvP — Stun-Lock Duelist

  • Max Veil of Dusk, Ambush, Cheap Shot, Assassinate, Smoke Step
  • DEX 55 / AGI 25 / VIT 20
  • Umbral Shroud + Nightfang Daggers
  • Priority: crit chance → survival → reset stealth
  • S-tier opener; keep Smoke Step for the escape

🌿 PvE — Sustained Bleeder

  • Drop Smoke Step for Rupturing Strike + Shadow Flurry uptime
  • DEX 55 / AGI 35 / VIT 10
  • More crit damage, less survival
  • Best for D7–D9 boss burn phases
  • Re-stealth on kills via Umbral Shroud 4pc to chain packs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shadow Assassin the highest single-target DPS?
For opening burst, yes — its stealth-empowered Assassinate can delete a squishy target in one combo. Over a long fight its sustained DPS trails the Blood Mage because it must re-enter stealth between burst windows.
How does stealth work for the Shadow Assassin?
Veil of Dusk grants stealth for 6 seconds or until you attack. While stealthed you move faster, are untargetable by most abilities, and your next attack from stealth is guaranteed to crit. Taking area damage or channeling breaks stealth early.
What stats should a Shadow Assassin prioritise?
DEX is primary for crit chance and attack power. AGI (crit damage multiplier) is second, then a small VIT investment to survive being focused. STR and INT are dump stats for this subclass.
What is the Shadow Assassin burst combo?
Open from Veil of Dusk stealth with Ambush for the guaranteed crit, immediately chain Assassinate while the Exposed debuff is up, then Shadow Flurry to spend combo points. Rupturing Strike finishes if the target survives.
How is crit itemization handled?
Stack crit chance to roughly 55–60%, then pivot everything into crit damage (AGI and crit-damage affixes). Because Ambush and Assassinate already guarantee crits from stealth, crit damage multiplies your opener more than raw crit chance does past the soft cap.
What is the difference between the PvP and PvE build?
PvE spec drops the escape (Smoke Step) for Rupturing Strike sustained damage and runs more crit damage. PvP keeps Smoke Step and Cheap Shot for the stun-lock, trades some crit damage for VIT, and prioritises resetting stealth to survive focus fire.
How do I survive as such a squishy subclass?
Survival is positional, not stat-based. Use Veil of Dusk to disengage, Smoke Step to break line of sight, and never blow your opener until you can follow it with a stealth reset. In PvE, kill order matters more than tanking hits.
What is the Combo Points mechanic?
Ambush, Cheap Shot, and Shadow Flurry each build 1–2 combo points, up to 5. Finishers like Assassinate and Rupturing Strike scale with combo points spent — a 5-point Assassinate hits roughly 2.4x harder than a 1-point one.
Which gear set is best-in-slot for Shadow Assassin?
The Umbral Shroud 4-piece is BiS: 2pc grants +12% crit damage, 4pc refreshes Veil of Dusk on a killing blow, enabling stealth-to-stealth chaining. Pair with twin Nightfang Daggers for the highest raw attack power.
How does Shadow Assassin rank on the class tier list?
It sits at S tier for PvP burst and duels and A tier for PvE, where the Blood Mage edges it on sustained clears. Check the class tier list for the current-season standings, as balance patches shift its position.
