Dark Knight

VAMPIRE SUBCLASS TANK · THREAT SKILLS V10–V36

The immovable core of any raid. The Dark Knight soaks the worst the night can throw and gives it back — Dread Aura turns every point of mitigated damage into a threat lever and a counter-strike. Slow to fall, impossible to peel.

Overview & Fantasy

Long after the flame of mortal life gutters out, the Dark Knight stands. Bound to the Vow of Obsidian, they no longer fear the killing blow — they invite it, because every wound turned aside is a debt the enemy has yet to pay. Where they plant their shield, the line does not break.

The Dark Knight is the game's main tank. Its job is to hold aggro, eat boss mechanics, and keep the party alive — but Dread Aura gives it a hybrid edge, letting it convert mitigation into damage. It is the safest solo farmer of high-tier, cooldown-gated dungeons: slow, but nearly unkillable.

Tank Stat Thresholds

Tanking in VvW is about reaching thresholds, not raw stat maxing. Hit these before you push endgame content:

CO-PRIMARY

VIT

Effective health pool. Stay above the encounter one-shot threshold (~24k HP for D9).

CO-PRIMARY

DEF

Flat damage reduction. Target 40% DR; diminishing returns after.

SECONDARY

STR

Threat & Dread Aura conversion damage. Spare points go here.

DUMP

DEX / INT

No tank scaling. Leave at base.

THE THREE THRESHOLDS

1) 40% flat damage reduction from DEF. 2) 75% block chance with a shield equipped. 3) Health pool above the content's one-shot threshold. Hit all three, then dump everything else into STR for hybrid damage.

Defensive Breakpoint Table

Because DEF converts to damage reduction on a diminishing curve, there are hard breakpoints where extra DEF stops paying off. Use these to know when to pivot into VIT and block. Verify your character's live values in the Skill Tree Planner.

WARNING

Do not over-invest DEF past the 55% soft cap — the returns fall off a cliff. Points spent above it are dead weight; pivot them into VIT (for the one-shot floor) or STR (for Dread Aura damage) instead.

Threat Generation

Holding aggro is the Dark Knight's primary job in groups. Threat comes from three sources, and Dread Aura multiplies all of it:

Dark Knight — threat tools
AbilityIDCooldownThreat Effect
Grave TauntV1310sHard forced-target for 4s; taunted enemy deals 10% less to you.
Umbral CleaveV186sAoE strike with a 3x threat multiplier; main aggro builder.
Dread AuraV22Toggle+50% threat on all sources; converts 15% mitigated damage to bonus Umbral Cleave damage.
Shield of VowsV2715sReflects 20% blocked damage as threat-generating retaliation.

THREAT PRIORITY

Keep Dread Aura up 100% of the time, open every pull with Grave Taunt, then hold aggro with Umbral Cleave on cooldown. Shield of Vows tops up threat on high-block encounters.

Survivability

Beyond passive mitigation, the Dark Knight has active buttons to survive spikes. Sequence them against telegraphed mechanics:

  1. Vitae Bulwark — pre-cast a large absorb shield before a telegraphed boss slam.
  2. Grave Taunt — the 10% damage reduction from the taunt stacks with your mitigation during dangerous phases.
  3. Shield of Vows — raise block reflection when the boss enters a rapid-attack window.
  4. Obsidian Resolve — the panic ultimate: 60% damage reduction for 8s. Save it for enrage or overlap mechanics.

Vitae Bulwark also self-heals for a portion of the absorbed damage, giving the Dark Knight strong solo sustain on cooldown-gated D8–D10 farms.

  • 1H + shield · Obsidian Vow 4-piece
  • Dread Aura + Grave Taunt + Umbral Cleave loop
  • S-tier raid frontline

⚔ Hybrid Solo-Farmer

  • Keep 40% DR + block cap, then dump into STR
  • VIT 40 / DEF 35 / STR 25
  • Dread Aura conversion fuels Umbral Cleave
  • Slower but near-unkillable D8–D10 farming

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dark Knight a pure tank?
It is the game's premier main tank, but not purely defensive. Its threat and damage-reduction scale off the same DEF and VIT stats, and Dread Aura converts a share of mitigated damage into personal damage — so a well-built Dark Knight tanks and contributes meaningful DPS.
What defensive stat thresholds should a Dark Knight hit?
Aim for 40% flat damage reduction from DEF before endgame dungeons, 75% block chance with a shield equipped, and enough VIT for a health pool above the boss one-shot threshold (roughly 24,000 HP for D9). Beyond 40% DR, DEF has diminishing returns, so pivot to VIT and block.
How does the Dark Knight generate threat?
Threat comes from Grave Taunt (a hard forced-target for 4s), Umbral Cleave (high threat multiplier AoE), and passive Dread Aura, which multiplies all your threat by 1.5x while active. Keeping Dread Aura up is the single biggest threat lever.
What stats does a Dark Knight prioritise?
VIT and DEF are co-primary — VIT for the effective health pool, DEF for flat damage reduction and block. STR is a light secondary for threat and Dread Aura conversion damage. DEX and INT are dump stats.
What is the Dread Aura mechanic?
Dread Aura is a toggle that increases your threat by 50% and converts 15% of all damage you mitigate into bonus damage on your next Umbral Cleave. It is the core of hybrid Dark Knight play — the more you tank, the more you hit back.
Can the Dark Knight solo content?
Yes. Its survivability and self-healing from Vitae Bulwark make it one of the safest solo farmers for high-tier dungeons, though clears are slower than a Blood Mage's. It rarely dies, which makes it ideal for grinding cooldown-gated D8–D10 runs.
What is a hybrid Dark Knight build?
A hybrid build keeps tank thresholds (40% DR, block cap) but invests spare points into STR to maximise Dread Aura conversion damage. It sacrifices a little effective health for enough personal DPS to solo-farm and contribute in Eclipse War, without dropping below main-tank viability.
What gear should a Dark Knight use?
A one-handed weapon plus shield for the block cap, and the Obsidian Vow set (4-piece) for its damage-reduction and threat multipliers. Enchant VIT and DEF on armour, block on the shield, and a single STR roll on the weapon for hybrid threat.
How does the Dark Knight handle boss one-shot mechanics?
Use Vitae Bulwark (a large absorb shield) pre-emptively before telegraphed slams, and keep your health pool above the encounter's one-shot threshold. Grave Taunt also reduces incoming damage from the taunted target by 10% for its duration.
Where does the Dark Knight rank on the tier list?
It is the S-tier main tank for group PvE and A-tier for solo farming and Eclipse War frontline duty. Its PvP ranking is B-tier — hard to kill but low burst. See the class tier list for the current season.
