Dungeon Leveling Strategy

Quick answer: Match dungeon tier to your level: Lv15-25 → Tier-1 dungeons (3-min clears, 600 XP). Lv25-35 → Tier-2 (5-min, 1200 XP). Lv35-50 → Tier-3 (8-min, 2400 XP). Higher tier = more XP/min only if you can clear without wiping. Drop a tier if you wipe twice.

Aeternum has ten main dungeons, from the level 1-15 Crypt of Shadows all the way up to the level 65-80 Blood Moon Temple, and each one is built from the same room shapes: combat rooms, a trap or puzzle, a safe room for healing, and a boss fight at the end. Picking the right dungeon for your level is the single biggest lever on your XP-per-minute — clear something too easy and you waste time, push something too hard and you waste cooldowns wiping. Here's how to read the tier list and match it to your character.

Tier-1 (Lv15-25)

At this bracket, Crypt of Shadows (levels 1-15, boss Grave Keeper at 600 HP) and the early rooms of Werewolf's Den (levels 10-25) are your best targets. Expect easy clears worth around 600 XP in about 3 minutes on normal difficulty, with a 4-hour cooldown so you can run it multiple times a day. Solo or duo both work fine here — the enemies in these early rooms (Shambling Skeletons, Rotting Ghouls, Pack Scouts) hit for single digits to low teens, well below what a level-15+ character's damage reduction curve can absorb. This is the best XP/min bracket in the entire game precisely because the content hasn't caught up to your gear yet.

Tier-2 (Lv25-35)

Werewolf's Den (levels 10-25, boss Alpha Dire Wolf at 1,200 HP) and Vampire's Lair (levels 15-30, boss Elder Blood Priest at 1,800 HP) sit in this range. Clears run roughly 1,200 XP over about 5 minutes at normal difficulty, best tackled duo or trio since enemy attack values start climbing into the 30s and 40s. This bracket is also where the first-clear bonus matters most: Vampire's Lair adds a puzzle room (blood-sealed door, three runic symbols) and a secret room with a 25% chance to appear, both of which pay out bonus gold and gear on top of the normal room rewards — making Tier-2 the best ratio of bonus rewards to time invested in the whole leveling arc.

Tier-3 (Lv35-50)

Swamp Labyrinth (levels 20-35, boss Ancient Bog at 2,000 HP) and Shadow Mountain Peak (levels 30-45, boss Stone Dragon at 3,500 HP) mark the shift into endgame-prep content. Clears are worth around 2,400 XP but take roughly 8 minutes at normal difficulty, and you'll want a trio or full quartet — boss attack values are now in the 70-105 range, and the trap and puzzle rooms carry real damage penalties (up to 25% of your HP) if you fail the DEX or INT check. This is also where crafting materials really start dropping in volume, since these dungeons feed the mid-tier gear you'll need before pushing into raid content.

Tier-4+ (Lv45+)

Demonic Stronghold (levels 35-55, boss Demon Knight Prime at 5,000 HP), Frozen Citadel (levels 40-60, boss Frost Dragon at 7,000 HP), Primal Wolf Sanctuary (levels 55-70, boss Great Pack Ancestor at 12,000 HP), and the endgame Blood Moon Temple (levels 65-80, boss the Blood Moon Entity at 15,000 HP and 6 unique abilities) all live in this tier. XP-per-minute actually drops here relative to Tier-3, since boss fights take longer and clears require careful party composition, but the legendary material drop rates climb sharply — Blood Moon Temple's mythic difficulty pushes loot multiplier up to 8x and XP multiplier up to 9x for parties that can actually survive the tyrannical/sanguine affix combination. These are gear-check dungeons: run them for loot and raid prep, not for raw leveling speed.

Wipe penalty

A wipe costs you roughly 30 seconds of respawn time plus however long it takes to fight back to where you died — on an 8-minute Tier-3 clear, one wipe can easily add 3-4 minutes, cutting your effective XP/min by a third or more. Wiping more than twice on the same run is the clearest signal to drop a tier: the enemy attack and defense multipliers scale hard between tiers (heroic and mythic affixes alone can multiply enemy stats by 1.7x to over 3x on top of the base difficulty), so a party that's wiping repeatedly is usually one tier ahead of where its gear supports, not just having bad luck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Solo dungeon viable?

Up to Tier-2 reliably — Crypt of Shadows and the early Werewolf's Den rooms are tuned for a single well-geared player. Past that, boss HP and attack values (1,800+ HP, 40+ attack by Vampire's Lair) start to require the sustained damage and survivability a second player brings, so Tier-3 and beyond are duo/trio/quartet content in practice even if a very overleveled solo character can occasionally push through.

Best dungeon for first-clear bonus?

Tier-2 — specifically Vampire's Lair, which stacks a puzzle-room reward (40-80 gold) with a 25%-chance secret room on top of the normal boss loot table, giving the best ratio of bonus reward to the roughly 5-minute time investment. Tier-1 dungeons clear faster but pay out less; Tier-3+ dungeons pay out more but take proportionally longer, making Tier-2 the efficiency sweet spot.
