Companions are permanent passive bonuses that never leave your side — picking the right one for your current activity is one of the highest-leverage decisions in VvW. This guide ranks every companion and tells you exactly when to use which one.

Companion Switching Strategy

Remember: switching companions has a 24-hour cooldown. Plan your switching around your weekly schedule:

Monday (weekly reset): Activate your combat companion — you want to be combat-ready for the new week's quests and dungeon cooldown reset
Wednesday/Thursday: If you have gathering sessions planned, switch to Stag of the Grove or Owl Sage
Pre-event: Switch to Moon Sprite at least 24h before a Blood Moon or Eclipse event starts
Raid Boss week: Keep combat companion active throughout — raid damage contribution matters more than any other activity

When to Unlock Each Companion

Level 1: Unlock your race starter (Bat Familiar or Wolf Spirit) immediately for XP accumulation
Level 10: Unlock Owl Sage — the +12% XP bonus accelerates progression significantly from here
Level 25: Unlock Death Wraith (Vampire) or Iron Bear (Werewolf) — your first true combat companion
Level 35: Arcane Sprite becomes your primary companion if you're on a skill-heavy build
Prestige 1: Unlock Storm Hawk — the undisputed best PvP companion in the game

BUDGET RECOMMENDATION

If you can only afford one companion beyond your starter, invest in Owl Sage (2,000 Gold). The accelerated levelling it provides pays for itself within a single play session by getting you to higher-level content faster.
