Who Is Void Scholar Ren?
Void Scholar Ren is the neutral NPC camped in the Shattered Wastes, and he's the only route into the Void Rift event. Ren was born into a Covenant noble vampire family but walked away from vampiric society at age 200 to study dimensional physics at the Eclipse Academy. He's spent the 600 years since obsessing over the Void Rift, and along the way he gave up nearly all of his vampiric abilities in exchange for pure intellectual power. That trade matters lore-wise: Ren is the only being in Aeternum who fully understands where the Void Overlord actually came from — and the only one who thinks it can be reasoned with instead of destroyed. Mechanically, Ren has no shop and won't sell you anything. His entire function is to gate the Void Rift event behind a three-quest chain. Skip his questline and you simply cannot queue for Void Rift when it goes live on your server.
The Three Quests, Step by Step
1. Into the Void (Level 52)
This is the opener. Ren sends you into the Rift itself to gather field data, and it's most players' first contact with Void-type enemies.
- Objective 1: Find Void Scholar Ren's camp in the Shattered Wastes.
- Objective 2: Collect 5 Void Essence samples.
- Objective 3: Defeat the Void Rift Herald.
- Objective 4: Return to Ren.
Rewards: 45,000 XP, 20,000 gold, and the Void Research Notes quest item. That item doesn't do anything on its own — it's a flag that unlocks progress toward Void Rift event access, so don't vendor it or worry if it clutters your bag. Full step-by-step breakdown at our Into the Void quest page.
2. Ren's Discovery (Level 55)
The bridge quest. Ren has analyzed the Void Essence samples you brought back and needs a second, deeper pass before he'll trust you with the final confrontation. Expect more Void Essence farming and additional dialogue that expands on the Void Overlord's nature — this is where the lore starts paying off, since Ren begins explaining why he doesn't want the Rift simply "closed" the way everyone else assumes it should be.
3. The Overlord Stirs (Level 60)
The finale, and the one that actually flips the switch on Void Rift event access.
- Objective 1: Complete Into the Void and Ren's Discovery.
- Objective 2: Speak with Void Scholar Ren.
- Objective 3: Kill the Void Wraith boss.
- Objective 4: Report back to Ren.
Rewards: 80,000 XP, 40,000 gold, the Void Research Badge cosmetic, and — the actual point of the whole chain — permanent Void Rift event access on your account. Preparation Tips
- Level ahead, not behind: Because the chain spans Level 52 to 60, it's easy to outlevel the early steps naturally while questing through the Shattered Wastes. Don't rush it at exactly Level 52 if your gear is thin — the Void Rift Herald hits harder than a normal story boss of that level.
- Stock Void Essence-friendly consumables: Void-type enemies apply stacking debuffs that scale with fight duration. Bring cleanse potions if your class doesn't have a built-in cleanse.
- Don't skip Ren's dialogue: The quest text isn't filler. Ren's explanation of the Void Overlord directly sets up the Void Rift lore and the mechanics you'll see in the actual event, covered in our Void Rift event guide.

FAQ
Do I have to finish all three quests before Void Rift opens on my server?
Yes. Void Rift event access is tied to completing The Overlord Stirs specifically — Into the Void and Ren's Discovery are prerequisites for it, not separate unlocks.
Can I start the chain before Level 52?
No, Into the Void is level-gated at 52 and won't show up in Ren's dialogue options until you hit that level.
Is the chain repeatable for extra rewards?
No. All three quests are one-time completions per character. The gold and XP are a nice bonus, but the real reward is the permanent event unlock.
What happens if I already fought Void Wraiths elsewhere?
Other Void Wraith encounters (for example, in the Abyssal Caverns storyline) don't substitute for the boss kill required in The Overlord Stirs — that objective tracks a specific instance tied to Ren's quest.
Does Void Scholar Ren sell gear or crafting items?
No. Ren has no shop. He is purely a quest giver and lore source — treat him as a gate to unlock, not a vendor to farm.
