Geography and Regions

The Howling Peaks form a crescent-shaped range spanning approximately 400 kilometres north to south. The range has five major zones, each controlled by a different pack:

🏔️ The Five Zones

  • The Five Peaks — the northern summits, highest altitude, home of the Five Peaks pack; above the vampire magic ceiling; home of the Heartstone
  • The Storm Plains — high plateau between peaks, perpetually storm-lashed; home of the Storm Plains pack; strategic chokepoint
  • The Ashwood — ancient forest clinging to the eastern slopes; home of the Ashwood Pack; primary source of moon-touched timber
  • The Deep Wilds — the valleys and canyon systems beneath the main range; home of the Deep Wilds pack; surprisingly warm, extensive cave networks
  • The Moon Road — a ridge running the full length of the range, used for inter-pack travel; neutral ground, no combat permitted

The range is not hospitable to non-werewolves. Altitude sickness affects most species above 3,000 metres; werewolves are immune. The perpetual storms of the Storm Plains are not natural — they are a deliberate weather phenomenon maintained by Storm Plains shamans, serving as both tactical obstacle and weather-control tool for the rest of the range.

Sacred Sites

Every square kilometre of the Peaks carries some significance to werewolf culture, but certain sites hold universal reverence across all packs:

The First Peak

Where Lykos stood during the first transformation. The summit is kept clear of structures by mutual pack agreement — nothing built, nothing altered. Werewolves make pilgrimages here during significant life events: first transformation, claiming Alpha rank, before major battles. The stone of the summit has been worn smooth by centuries of paws and bare feet.

The Heartstone Site

The largest Wolfstone fragment is buried at the base of the First Peak, 40 metres below the surface. Its location is marked above ground only by a ring of stones placed by Lykos himself. The stones are ordinary. Nothing marks them as significant to outside observers. Werewolves know.

The Council of Howls

A natural amphitheatre in the Storm Plains, sheltered from the perpetual storms by geological accident. This is where all five pack Alphas meet — for crisis summits, for succession announcements, for war declarations. The last Council of Howls occurred three years ago, when the Citadel of Blood's ward expansion threatened the Storm Plains border.

The Transformation Grounds

🐺 Coming-of-Age Ritual

Every werewolf's first full transformation is supposed to occur at the Transformation Grounds — a wide valley in the Deep Wilds, its floor worn smooth by generations of newly-shifted wolves. Werewolves born outside the Peaks often travel here for their first transformation even if they have already shifted elsewhere. Those who cannot make the journey are considered "unrooted" — not lesser, but missing something that others have.

The Packs of the Peaks

The Howling Peaks are home to four of the five founding packs. The fifth founding pack — the Moonborn Tribe — departed the Peaks in Year 847 for reasons that are debated among scholars (the Tribe says it was a calling; the other packs say it was an argument about the Wolfstone distribution).

Current pack territories are governed by the Territorial Accords, renegotiated every 200 years. The most recent renegotiation (Year 2,900) shifted the Storm Plains border 8 kilometres south following a decade-long dispute about storm coverage rights.

Why the Peaks Are Unbreachable

The Howling Peaks have never been successfully invaded. The Crimson Court has attempted large-scale assault seven times; smaller incursions are constant. None have succeeded in reaching the Heartstone. The reasons are layered:

  • Altitude — most vampire abilities degrade above 4,000 metres; shadow travel becomes unreliable; flight is exhausting; blood manipulation weakens
  • The Storms — Storm Plains shamans can redirect the perpetual storms; vampire flight through a directed storm has 100% fatality rate historically
  • Terrain — werewolves in their home terrain are between 30-50% more effective than in neutral territory; pursuit through mountain terrain heavily favours werewolves
  • The Wolfstone Field — within 10 kilometres of the Heartstone, the Wolfstone's Void Resistance property extends as an area effect; vampire abilities related to blood-dark weakened by approximately 40%
  • Pack Coordination — the packs have 3,000 years of mutual defence protocols; incursion detection triggers a coordinated response within minutes across all zones

"You do not invade the Howling Peaks. You announce to the mountains that you have come to die, and the mountains arrange for this to happen efficiently."

— House Voryn military records, Year 1,847, after the Seventh Failed Assault

Peaks Content for Players

The Howling Peaks are the primary werewolf hub and a significant content zone for both factions:

Werewolf Players

The Peaks function as a werewolf home base — crafting, training, questing, and social interactions all available. The zone has the highest lunar power density in the game, meaning transformation abilities are enhanced throughout. Pack questlines for all five founding packs begin or pass through the Peaks.

The Heartstone Event

Monthly Heartstone defence event: 200+ werewolf players defend the First Peak region against vampire raid forces. Failure allows vampires to establish a 48-hour foothold in the Storm Plains zone, reducing all werewolf players' pack-link range until the next event cycle.

Vampire Players — The Assault

The Peaks assault is the mirror of the Citadel raid — the most difficult vampire raid content. Reaching the Heartstone requires neutralising the Storm shamans, passing the Wolfstone Field weakness threshold, and defeating each pack's Alpha before they can call for support. Success allows vampires to temporarily suppress the Heartstone's monthly event for one cycle.

The First Peak Pilgrimage

Werewolf players who reach the First Peak summit during a full moon receive the "Lykos Touched" buff — a permanent 3% bonus to transformation speed that stacks up to three times. The buff requires the player to stand at the summit alone (no party) for 77 seconds.
