How to Rebind Skill Hotkeys — VvW
Category: Settings · 2026-05-07
Steps
- Open settings: /game/settings.html — Controls tab.
- Click skill slot: Slot becomes red, listening for new key.
- Press desired key: Esc to cancel.
- Save: Auto-saves on close. Cloud-sync.
The default hotbar layout
By default, VvW binds your skill slots to 1 through 9 on the number row, one slot per active skill in your loadout. A Vampire's early hotbar might be Blood Strike (1), Dark Shroud (2), Vampire Bite (3), and Shadow Step (4); a Werewolf's might start with Claw Strike, Howl, and Bite. Passives like Night Sense or Pack Sense and toggles like Shadowform don't need a hotbar slot since they're either always active or switched on once and left running.
Beyond the skill row, a handful of other keys are fixed: I opens your inventory, C opens the character sheet, M opens the map, G opens the clan panel, T opens the trading post, Enter focuses chat, and Esc closes the current panel or cancels an action. Only the numbered skill slots are rebindable — the menu shortcuts are fixed.
How rebinding works
Open the Controls tab in settings and click the skill slot you want to change. It turns red and starts listening — press any key and it takes over that slot immediately, bumping whatever key was previously bound. Press Esc while a slot is listening to cancel without changing anything. There's no separate "confirm" step: the new binding is live the instant you press a key, so it's worth testing it in a safe area before heading into a fight.
Changes auto-save when you close the settings panel and sync to your account, so a rebind you set on one device carries over the next time you log in on another.
Common rebind patterns
Most players rebind for one of two reasons: comfort or conflict. A few patterns come up often:
- Move skills off the number row onto Q-T. If you use WASD-style movement or a mouse-heavy playstyle, having your core rotation on Q, W, E, R, T under your left hand can be faster to reach than stretching to the number row.
- Put your highest-cooldown skill on an easy key. A long-cooldown finisher like Nightmare Curse (6s cooldown) is worth binding somewhere your finger naturally rests, since you'll be reaching for it at the exact moment a fight turns.
- Group defensive skills together. Binding a shield or escape skill like Shadow Step next to your ultimate makes it easier to react under pressure without hunting across the hotbar.
- Keep passives and toggles off the hotbar. Since Blood Thirst, Dark Instinct, and similar passives trigger automatically, don't waste a convenient key on them — save your best-reach keys for skills you actually press mid-fight.
Avoid binding a skill key over one of the fixed menu shortcuts (I, C, M, G, T, Enter, Esc) — the rebind screen won't let you overwrite those, but it's worth knowing so you don't plan a layout around a key that isn't actually free.
Conflicts to watch for
The most common rebind mistake is overlapping a skill key with a browser or OS shortcut. Function keys, Ctrl/Alt combinations, and F11 (which VvW itself uses to toggle fullscreen) can get intercepted by the browser before the game ever sees them, so a skill bound to one of those may appear to do nothing when pressed. Stick to plain letter and number keys for anything you need to fire instantly in combat.
The second common conflict is muscle memory clashing with class switching. If you play both a Vampire and a Werewolf character and rebind one differently from the other, you can end up pressing the wrong key out of habit right when it matters. Many players deliberately keep the same relative layout across characters — for example, always putting their fastest-cooldown skill on the same key — specifically to avoid this.
Resetting to default
If a custom layout stops feeling right, look for the "Reset to Default" option on the same Controls tab — it restores the standard 1-9 skill row and fixed menu keys in one click, undoing every custom rebind at once. There's no per-key reset; it's all-or-nothing, so rebind deliberately rather than tweaking one key at a time if you think you'll want to start over.
FAQ
Do rebinds carry over to a new character? Yes — keybinds are an account-level setting synced through the cloud, not tied to a single character, so a fresh character on the same account keeps your layout.
Can I bind two skills to the same key? No, binding a key that's already in use simply moves that key to the new slot and frees up the old slot's key — you can't have one key trigger two skills.
Why did my rebind not save? Rebinds save when you close the settings panel. If your browser or tab crashed before you closed it, the change may not have been written — reopen settings and re-apply it.
Can I rebind mouse buttons instead of keyboard keys? The rebind listener accepts most standard keyboard input; mouse-button binding support depends on your browser's key-capture behavior and is not guaranteed on every device.
Is there a way to preview a new layout before committing? Not a formal preview mode — since a rebind takes effect the instant you press the new key, the safest approach is to rebind while out of combat and test the new slot on a training dummy or low-risk mob first.
Does rebinding cost gold or any in-game resource? No, rebinding keys is free and unlimited — it's purely a control preference, separate from the resource cost of respeccing your actual skill points.
Can I have different keybind layouts for different classes? Not per-class automatically — keybinds are account-wide, so switching characters keeps the same layout. If you want a different feel per class, you'll need to manually rebind each time you switch, or settle on one layout that works across all of them.
