How to Disable Animations — VvW Performance

Category: Settings · 2026-05-07

Steps

  1. Settings → Graphics: Open /game/settings.html#graphics
  2. Animation quality → Off: Disables combat hit-flash, particle effects.
  3. Reduce-motion → On: Disables UI transitions.
  4. Save: Re-enter combat to verify.

Why disable animations

VvW runs entirely in the browser, so its combat animations — hit-flashes, particle bursts on crits, ability trails, panel slide-ins — are rendered on the fly rather than pre-baked into a video. On a low-spec laptop, an old integrated GPU, or a phone on mobile data, that rendering load adds up fast, especially during group fights or Eclipse War when a dozen skills fire at once. Turning animations off removes the visual load without changing any combat math: your damage, cooldowns, and drops are identical either way.

There are three separate reasons players use this setting, and they lead to slightly different choices below:

What each toggle actually does

Animation quality → Off disables the heaviest visual effects: combat hit-flash (the white/red flash on a landed hit), particle effects (blood splatter, spell trails, AoE rings), and skill-cast glows. Damage numbers, health bars, and cooldown timers still display normally — you lose the decoration, not the information.

Reduce-motion → On is a separate toggle aimed at UI, not combat. It disables panel slide/fade transitions, the smooth camera pan when opening the map, and button hover animations. It's the same concept as your OS-level "reduce motion" accessibility setting, and it works even if Animation quality is left on.

You can run either toggle independently. A player on a fast PC who is simply motion-sensitive might leave Animation quality on and only flip Reduce-motion. A player on a weak laptop who just wants FPS will usually want both off.

Browser-level tips for more performance

The in-game toggles help, but the browser itself is often the bigger bottleneck on older machines. A few settings outside the game make a real difference:

Which fights benefit most

The performance gain from disabling animations scales with how many effects are on screen at once. A single-target duel barely taxes your machine either way, but group content stacks particle effects fast: an Eclipse War skirmish with a dozen players firing AoE skills, a clan raid boss with multiple adds, or a crowded trading post can all produce visible stutter on weaker hardware. If you only care about smoothness in those specific situations, it's reasonable to leave animations on for solo farming and switch them off before joining a large group fight — the toggle is instant, so there's no reason to commit to one setting permanently.

PvP players sometimes report a secondary benefit: with hit-flash and particle clutter removed, it's easier to visually track where crowd control effects land and where enemies are standing mid-fight. That's a readability win separate from the FPS win, and it's part of why some players with strong hardware still choose to play with animations off.

Troubleshooting

Settings not saving? The toggle saves when you leave the Graphics tab, not on every click — make sure you navigate away or close the settings panel rather than closing the whole browser tab immediately after changing it.

Still seeing hit-flash after turning it off? Re-enter combat to refresh the render state; the setting doesn't retroactively redraw an animation that's already mid-play.

Setting reverted after a patch? Graphics preferences are stored per-browser, not account-wide, so a browser update or clearing site data can occasionally reset them — just reapply.

FAQ

Does disabling animations affect my damage or hit chance? No. Animation quality is purely visual. Your stats, crit chance, and combat outcomes are calculated the same way regardless of this setting.

Will this help on mobile? Yes — combine it with Low Data Mode for the biggest mobile performance gain, especially on older phones or slower connections.

Do I need to disable animations for every character? No, the setting is stored per browser/device, so it applies across all characters on that account automatically.

Can I turn animations back on for specific fights, like bosses? Yes, the toggle is instant — flip it back on any time from the same Graphics tab, no restart required.

Is this the same as my browser's reduce-motion setting? Similar idea, different scope. The in-game Reduce-motion toggle only affects VvW's own UI; your OS or browser accessibility setting is separate and won't change in-game combat visuals.

Should I also change my browser's own animation settings? It can help further. Browsers apply their own transition animations when switching tabs or scrolling — disabling smooth scrolling or cosmetic animations at the browser level frees up additional rendering resources on top of what the in-game toggle saves.

Does this setting affect other players I see on screen? No — it only changes what your own client renders. Other players' hit-flashes and particles are suppressed on your screen only; nobody else's game changes because of your setting.
