How Chapters Work
Story Chapters are unlocked through the game/story.html interface. Each chapter contains exactly 5 story quests that must be completed in order. Upon finishing all 5 quests, the chapter's boss fight unlocks — a challenging encounter with unique mechanics and a guaranteed Crystal Shard drop upon victory.
Completing a chapter boss awards a permanent title, a lump sum of gold and XP, and occasionally unique cosmetic items tied to that chapter's region. You don't need to complete chapters in sequence to access later ones, but the level requirements effectively enforce a natural progression order.
Importantly: if you die to a chapter boss, you are not locked out. Bosses respawn on a short cooldown, allowing you to adjust your build, gear up, and try again without penalty. This makes the story chapters more forgiving than PvP ranking — you can attempt any boss multiple times.

Chapter 1 — The Shattered Throne (Level 1+)
The opening chapter takes place in Darkwood Forest, Aeternum's starting region. The five introductory quests establish the lore of the Crystal Shards and guide new players through core game mechanics — combat, crafting, gathering, and NPC interaction. No gear requirements; the content is tuned for level 1–10 characters.
The chapter boss, Shadow Lord Malveth, is a straightforward encounter. He has no phase transitions and uses predictable attack patterns — ideal for players still learning combat timing. His Void Shadow attack deals moderate magic damage but is telegraphed clearly.
Reward: 500 gold + 1,000 XP + "Shard Seeker" title + Crystal Shard Fragment I
Tips: Don't skip the 5 quest dialogues — they contain early lore hints that become relevant in Chapters 6 and 7. Malveth is beatable in starter gear; no farming required.
Chapter 2 — Blood on the Mountain (Level 15+)
Chapter 2 introduces Iron Peak Mountains, Aeternum's second region. The quests escalate into territory disputes between vampire and werewolf clans — with your character caught in the middle. The quests require visiting multiple subzones, so expect more exploration than Chapter 1.
The boss, Warchief Gorak the Eternal, is the first encounter with a phase mechanic. At or below 50% HP, Gorak enters Eternal Rage: his attack speed increases by 40% and he gains 20% damage reduction. This is a punishing transition that catches underprepared players off guard.
- Bring STR-based gear — Gorak's defense is high and INT builds will struggle with damage
- Use burst damage consumables in phase 1 to get him below 50% quickly before the rage transition
- Stock healing potions; his Phase 2 damage output requires active healing
Reward: 1,500 gold + 3,000 XP + "Mountain Conqueror" title + Crystal Shard Fragment II
Chapters 3–5 — Mid-Game
Chapter 3 — The Drowned City (Level 25+)
Set in the ruins of Sunken Varath, Chapter 3 introduces water-based mechanics where certain terrain slows movement and reduces DEX. Boss Duchess Vethara summons water elementals during the fight — kill the adds first or they'll overwhelm you. Reward: 3,000 gold + "Tidecleaver" title.
Chapter 4 — Ashes of the Sun (Level 40+)
The Cinderplain Wastes are Aeternum's volcanic region. Boss Undying Pyre is fire-immune — don't bring fire-damage gear. He uses AoE flame bursts on a 10-second cycle; positioning matters. This chapter benefits heavily from having the Elder Theron hero to reduce cooldowns. Reward: 6,000 gold + "Ashwalker" title.
Chapter 5 — Frozen Requiem (Level 55+)
The Glacial Reaches introduce freeze debuffs that reduce your action speed. Boss Glacial Sovereign applies a stacking freeze on hit — prioritize DEX gear to reduce freeze duration. She also heals for 5% HP if you take more than 30 seconds between damage hits. Stay aggressive. Reward: 12,000 gold + "Frostbreaker" title.
Chapter 6 — The Demon Conclave (Level 68+)
Chapter 6 is a dramatic difficulty spike. The Abyssal Rifts region is endgame territory — expect level 65–75 mobs in quest areas. The quests themselves involve infiltrating a demon summit and contain some of the game's most detailed lore writing.
Demon Patriarch Zar'oth is the hardest pre-final boss in the game. He deals void damage — a damage type that bypasses standard physical and magical resistance. Key mechanics:
- Void Corruption: A stacking debuff that deals 3% max HP per stack every 3 seconds. Clear it with Purification consumables
- Demon Summons: At 70% and 40% HP, Zar'oth summons two Lesser Demons. Kill them immediately — they buff his damage by 15% each if left alive
- Phase Transition at 30% HP: Zar'oth channels for 5 seconds then deals massive AoE void damage. Use your highest cooldown defensive skill during this window
Recommended build: High INT with Void resistance gear. Bring at least 5 Purification potions and 3 high-tier HP flasks. The Rael hero's Soul Drain active is exceptional here.
Reward: 30,000 gold + 60,000 XP + "Voidwalker" title + Void Crystal Shard (Crystal Shard Fragment VI)
Chapter 7 — Blood Moon's End (Level 80+)
The final chapter. The five quests culminate years of Aeternum's lore into a single confrontation — the discovery of the Eternal Sanctum and the revelation of the Eternal Queen's role in the Crystal Shard curse. The dialogue varies based on your chosen race, with vampires and werewolves receiving distinct story beats in the final quest.
Eternal Queen Seraphel is a three-phase encounter:
- Phase 1 (100–50% HP): Standard attack patterns with magic projectiles and a summoned shield that must be destroyed before damage resumes
- Phase 2 (50–25% HP): Seraphel gains +25% STR and her attack speed increases. She also summons Crystal Guardians every 45 seconds
- Phase 3 (25–0% HP): Full AoE Blood Moon — a pulsing damage field that deals 8% max HP per second. You must end the fight quickly or be attrited to death
Strategy: Prestige-level gear is strongly recommended. STR/INT hybrid builds perform best — you need enough burst to push through Phase 3 quickly while sustaining through Phase 2. Stock maximum consumables. If you have the Rael hero, his Soul Drain active in Phase 3 can make the difference.
Reward: 100,000 gold + 250,000 XP + Crystal Shard Fragment VII + exclusive race-specific epilogue dialogue + "Champion of Aeternum" — the rarest player title in VvW
General Tips
- Save your best consumables for Chapters 6 and 7. The early chapters are clearable with basic potions. Chapters 6–7 genuinely require your top-tier consumable stack.
- Complete all region quests before attempting chapter bosses. Side quests in each region give XP and gear that meaningfully improve your performance against the chapter boss. Don't rush the boss encounter before you're at the region's level ceiling.
- Bosses respawn on failure. There's no shame in dying and returning. Use failed attempts to study boss patterns and refine your approach. VvW doesn't lock you out or penalize retries.
- Race-specific dialogue in Chapter 7 is worth experiencing. If you plan to eventually play both races, consider saving the final chapter as a discovery moment for your second playthrough.
Champion of Aeternum is currently held by fewer than 0.1% of players. Will you be among them? The title displays on your public profile, leaderboards, and during PvP matchmaking — one of the most prestigious marks of progression in the entire game.
