TL;DR: VvW has three gathering professions — Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning — each with 10 skill levels and 10 unique resources. Every player can learn all three professions simultaneously. This guide covers all 30 gatherable resources, the best leveling routes from skill 1 to 10 for each profession, XP requirements per level, gold-per-hour at each tier, and which resources sell best on the Auction House. Whether you gather for crafting, for profit, or for both, this is the only guide you need.
"The land provides for those patient enough to listen — and skilled enough to harvest."
How Gathering Works
Gathering in VvW is straightforward but has mechanical depth that most players overlook. Here are the core rules:
- Skill levels 1–10: Each profession has 10 skill levels. Higher levels unlock higher-tier resource nodes and improve gather speed and yield.
- Node visibility: You can only see resource nodes at or below your skill level. A Mining skill 5 player sees T1–T5 ore nodes but T6+ nodes are invisible on their map and in the world.
- Gather time: Base gather time is 5 seconds per node at skill level 1. Each skill level reduces gather time by 0.3 seconds. At skill 10, gather time is 2.3 seconds per node.
- Yield bonus: At the base level for a node tier, you gather 1 resource per node. At skill level +2 above the node tier, you gain a 50% chance for double yield. At +4 above, you gain guaranteed double yield plus a 25% chance for a bonus rare drop.
- Tool quality: Better gathering tools further reduce gather time and increase rare drop chance. See our gold spending guide for tool upgrade recommendations.
- Node respawn: Gathering nodes respawn 5–10 minutes after being harvested. Higher-tier nodes have longer respawn timers.
Mining: Ore, Gems & Stone
Mining is the most profitable gathering profession for mid-to-endgame players because ore is consumed in large quantities by Blacksmithing (weapons, heavy armor) and Jewelcrafting (gems, trinkets). Demand consistently outpaces supply on most servers.
Mining Resources by Tier
| Tier | Resource | Zone | XP to Unlock | AH Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Copper Ore | Ashvale (starter) | 0 | 5–10g |
| 2 | Tin Ore | Ashvale, Thornwood | 100 XP | 12–20g |
| 3 | Iron Ore | Thornwood, Misthollow | 350 XP | 25–40g |
| 4 | Silver Ore | Misthollow, Duskreach | 800 XP | 45–70g |
| 5 | Shadowsteel Ore | Duskreach, Ironveil | 1,500 XP | 80–130g |
| 6 | Mithril Ore | Ironveil, Shadowfen | 2,500 XP | 120–200g |
| 7 | Darkstone Ore | Shadowfen, Ashen Wastes | 4,000 XP | 180–280g |
| 8 | Bloodiron Ore | Ashen Wastes, Crimson Peaks | 6,000 XP | 250–400g |
| 9 | Voidstone Ore | Crimson Peaks, Eternal Rift | 9,000 XP | 350–550g |
| 10 | Aetherium Ore | Eternal Rift | 13,000 XP | 500–800g |
Bonus drops from Mining: All ore nodes have a chance to yield bonus gems. Gem drop rate increases with skill level and tool quality. Common gems (Ruby, Sapphire) drop at ~10% base rate. Rare gems (Crimson Fury, Moonstone) drop at ~2% base rate. At Mining 10 with an Epic pick, rare gem drop rate increases to ~5%.
Mining Leveling Route (Skill 1-10)
Start at Ashvale Village and run a clockwise loop through the northern caves. This circuit has 8 Copper and 5 Tin nodes with a 5-minute respawn cycle. Complete the loop in ~6 minutes, wait 1 minute, repeat. Gather ~40 ore per hour. Expected time to Skill 3: 2–3 hours.
The Thornwood Mines dungeon entrance area (no need to enter the dungeon) has 12 Iron nodes and 4 Tin nodes packed into a small area. This is the densest node concentration in the early game. Gather ~55 ore per hour. Expected time to Skill 5: 3–4 hours.
The Duskreach Quarry is a dedicated mining area with 15 Silver and 8 Shadowsteel nodes. Competition is moderate — try off-peak hours (early morning server time). Gather ~45 ore per hour but each ore is worth significantly more. Expected time to Skill 7: 5–6 hours.
The western ridge of Ashen Wastes contains Darkstone, Bloodiron, and at Skill 9+ Voidstone nodes. This is dangerous territory (level 70–85 mobs nearby) but the ore value makes it worthwhile. Bring combat consumables. Gather ~35 ore per hour at high value. Expected time to Skill 10: 8–10 hours.
Herbalism: Herbs, Reagents & Rare Flora
Herbalism supplies Alchemy (potions, elixirs, flasks) and Inscription (rune inks, scrolls). Alchemy consumables are used by every player in the game, making herbs a perpetually in-demand resource. Herbalism is also the best gathering profession for casual players because herb nodes are spread throughout the world, not concentrated in dangerous areas.
Herbalism Resources by Tier
| Tier | Resource | Zone | XP to Unlock | AH Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Silverleaf | Ashvale (starter) | 0 | 3–8g |
| 2 | Thornbloom | Ashvale, Thornwood | 100 XP | 8–15g |
| 3 | Moonpetal | Thornwood, Misthollow | 350 XP | 18–30g |
| 4 | Duskroot | Misthollow, Duskreach | 800 XP | 35–55g |
| 5 | Moonbloom Herb | Duskreach, Ironveil | 1,500 XP | 60–100g |
| 6 | Shadow Moss | Ironveil, Shadowfen | 2,500 XP | 90–150g |
| 7 | Bloodthistle | Shadowfen, Ashen Wastes | 4,000 XP | 130–210g |
| 8 | Nightshade Bloom | Ashen Wastes, Crimson Peaks | 6,000 XP | 190–300g |
| 9 | Voidpetal | Crimson Peaks, Eternal Rift | 9,000 XP | 280–450g |
| 10 | Aetherial Lotus | Eternal Rift | 13,000 XP | 400–650g |
Bonus drops from Herbalism: Herb nodes yield bonus reagents used in advanced Alchemy recipes. Common reagents (Pollen Dust, Root Extract) drop at ~15% rate. Rare reagents (Shadow Essence, Vitality Crystal) drop at ~3% rate. During Spring Awakening event, all herb yields double and 15 unique seasonal herbs become available.
Herbalism Leveling Route (Skill 1-10)
The meadows south of Ashvale Village have the densest low-tier herb spawns. Run a figure-8 pattern through the two meadow areas. 10 Silverleaf and 6 Thornbloom nodes on a 4-minute respawn. Expected time to Skill 3: 2 hours.
Follow the Misthollow River from the north bridge to the southern waterfall. Herb nodes line both banks with excellent density — 14 Moonpetal and 7 Duskroot nodes. Safe zone with no aggressive mobs. Expected time to Skill 5: 3 hours.
The forest trails in Ironveil are packed with Moonbloom Herb and Shadow Moss. Follow the main trail network — 11 nodes visible at Skill 5, increasing to 18 at Skill 6 as Shadow Moss becomes visible. Expected time to Skill 7: 5 hours.
The eastern plateau of Crimson Peaks is the premier high-tier herb farming zone. Nightshade Bloom and Voidpetal nodes cover the plateau, with Aetherial Lotus spawning exclusively near the summit at Skill 10. Mobs are level 75–90 — bring a combat buddy or strong consumables. Expected time to Skill 10: 9–11 hours.
Skinning: Leather, Pelts & Rare Hides
Skinning is unique among gathering professions because it does not use static resource nodes. Instead, you skin monster corpses after killing them. This means Skinning integrates naturally into combat gameplay — you farm XP, loot, and skinning resources simultaneously. Skinning supplies Leatherworking (medium armor, cloaks, accessories) and Tailoring (cloth reinforcement, hybrid armor).
Skinning Resources by Tier
| Tier | Resource | Monster Type | XP to Unlock | AH Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rough Leather | Wolves, Boars | 0 | 4–8g |
| 2 | Thin Hide | Stags, Bears | 100 XP | 10–18g |
| 3 | Sturdy Leather | Dire Wolves, Wargs | 350 XP | 22–35g |
| 4 | Thick Pelt | Cave Bears, Raptors | 800 XP | 40–60g |
| 5 | Shadowhide | Shadow Beasts, Wraiths | 1,500 XP | 70–115g |
| 6 | Ironscale | Drakes, Basilisks | 2,500 XP | 105–170g |
| 7 | Dreadleather | Ghouls, Abominations | 4,000 XP | 155–240g |
| 8 | Bloodfur | Vampiric Beasts, Lycans | 6,000 XP | 220–350g |
| 9 | Voidhide | Void Terrors, Shades | 9,000 XP | 310–500g |
| 10 | Aetherial Pelt | Rift Beasts (Eternal Rift) | 13,000 XP | 450–720g |
Bonus drops from Skinning: Skinning has the highest rare drop rate of all gathering professions. Every skinned corpse has a chance to yield rare crafting components — Pristine Fangs, Enchanted Sinew, or Elemental Cores — used in high-tier Leatherworking recipes. Base rare drop rate is ~8%, scaling to ~15% at Skinning 10 with an Epic skinning knife.
Skinning Leveling Route (Skill 1-10)
The three wolf dens northeast of Ashvale Village have rapid respawning wolves (level 5–15) that are easy to kill and skin. Kill-skin cycle takes ~8 seconds per wolf. With good AoE damage, clear 80–100 wolves per hour. Expected time to Skill 3: 1.5–2 hours.
Three cave systems in Thornwood contain bears (level 25–35) that drop Sturdy Leather and Thick Pelts. Bears have more HP but yield 2 leather per skin vs 1 for wolves. Expected time to Skill 5: 3–4 hours. Combines well with Mining since bear caves contain ore nodes.
The Shadowfen Marshes have roaming Shadow Beasts and Drakes along established patrol routes. Follow these routes and skin everything you kill. Shadow Beasts are level 50–60 and drop valuable Shadowhide. Expected time to Skill 7: 5–6 hours.
The most dangerous but most profitable skinning zone. Void Terrors and Rift Beasts (level 80–100) drop the highest-tier leather and have the best rare drop rates. Party recommended for efficient farming. Expected time to Skill 10: 8–10 hours. Gold earned during leveling: 40,000–60,000g from leather sales alone.
Profession Comparison: Which to Level First?
| Factor | Mining | Herbalism | Skinning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold/hour (Skill 10) | 1,800–2,800g | 1,500–2,400g | 2,000–3,200g |
| Leveling time (1-10) | 18–23 hours | 15–19 hours | 14–18 hours |
| Danger level | High (mine zones) | Low (open areas) | Medium (combat req.) |
| AH demand | Very High | High | High |
| Synergy with combat | Low | Low | Perfect |
| Event value | Medium | Very High (Spring) | Medium |
Recommended order: Skinning first (integrates with normal combat leveling), then Herbalism (safe, fast, high event value), then Mining (most profitable at max level but dangerous to level). However, all three are worth maxing — a player with all three at Skill 10 can earn 5,000–8,000g per hour from pure gathering, rivaling advanced AH trading for income.
Top AH Sellers by Profession
Not all resources sell equally. Here are the three highest-demand resources per profession based on server-wide AH data:
Mining Best Sellers
- Shadowsteel Ore (T5): Used in T5 weapon crafting, the most popular Blacksmithing bracket. Consistent 80–130g per unit with 200+ daily sales volume.
- Bloodiron Ore (T8): Required for endgame weapon upgrades. Limited supply due to dangerous farming zone. 250–400g per unit.
- Bonus gems (all tiers): Gems from mining sell faster than the ore itself. Crimson Fury gems command 1,200–2,000g each.
Herbalism Best Sellers
- Moonbloom Herb (T5): Main ingredient in XP elixirs. Demand spikes 40–60% during Blood Moon events. 60–100g per unit normally, 100–160g during events.
- Nightshade Bloom (T8): Used in endgame flasks that provide 2-hour stat buffs. Every raider needs these weekly. 190–300g per unit.
- Shadow Essence (rare reagent): Drops from T6+ herb nodes. Required for Inscription rune scrolls. Low supply, high demand. 400–700g each.
Skinning Best Sellers
- Ironscale (T6): Used in Drake Armor crafting, one of the most popular medium armor sets. 105–170g per unit with steady demand.
- Bloodfur (T8): Required for the BiS Leatherworking cloak recipe. Very limited supply. 220–350g per unit.
- Pristine Fangs (rare drop): Crafting component for Legendary accessories. Drops from T7+ monsters at ~5% rate. 800–1,500g each.
Common Gathering Mistakes
- Gathering nodes below your skill level: Gathering T1 Copper at Mining Skill 8 wastes time. Low-tier resources sell for almost nothing and provide negligible profession XP. Always gather at or near your skill tier for maximum gold and XP per gather.
- Ignoring tool upgrades: An Uncommon mining pick at Skill 7 gathers 40% slower than a Rare pick. The 3,000–6,000g tool upgrade pays for itself within 3–4 hours of gathering through improved speed and yield. See our gold spending guide for tool upgrade recommendations.
- Selling raw materials during event weeks: Resource prices drop 15–25% during event weeks because casual farmers flood the AH with materials. Stockpile during events, sell the week after when supply normalizes and prices recover.
- Not gathering during Blood Moon: Blood Moon increases all drop rates by 50%, including gathering bonus drops. Your gem and rare reagent drop rates nearly double during Blood Moon. These two days should be your heaviest gathering sessions of the month.
- Skipping Skinning because it requires combat: Skinning is the fastest profession to level because you earn Skinning XP alongside combat XP — zero additional time investment. Players who skip Skinning miss the most time-efficient gathering profession in the game.
